What is ETIAS?

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is a pre-travel authorisation being introduced by the European Union for nationals of visa-exempt countries, including British citizens. Post-Brexit, UK passport holders will no longer be able to enter Schengen Area countries without this prior authorisation.

ETIAS is not a visa. It is a quick online application that, once approved, is electronically linked to your British passport. It will be valid for three years or until your passport expires, and will allow multiple short stays across the 26 Schengen Area countries.

Which countries will require ETIAS?

ETIAS will cover all 26 countries in the Schengen Area. Whether you're heading to Paris for the weekend, skiing in Austria, or island-hopping in Greece — you'll need a valid ETIAS before you fly. Countries include:

🇫🇷 France
🇩🇪 Germany
🇮🇹 Italy
🇪🇸 Spain
🇳🇱 Netherlands
🇬🇷 Greece
🇵🇹 Portugal
🇦🇹 Austria
🇨🇭 Switzerland
🇸🇪 Sweden
🇳🇴 Norway
🇵🇱 Poland

Not sure if your destination requires ETIAS? Visit ETA Permits to check your eligibility and begin your application.

Important: ETIAS applies to air, land, and sea travel into the Schengen Area — unlike some travel authorisations which only apply to flights. If you're driving through France or taking a ferry to Spain, you'll still need a valid ETIAS.

Frequently asked questions

Do Brits need ETIAS after Brexit?
Yes. Following the UK's departure from the European Union, British citizens are now treated as third-country nationals when visiting the Schengen Area. Once ETIAS launches, UK passport holders will be required to obtain authorisation before every trip to Europe.
When will ETIAS come into force?
ETIAS has been delayed several times but is expected to launch in 2025. It is being introduced alongside the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). We recommend applying as soon as ETIAS becomes available to avoid any last-minute disruption to your travel plans.
How long is ETIAS valid for British citizens?
ETIAS will be valid for three years from the date of issue, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. It will allow multiple short stays across the Schengen Area during its validity period.
How long can Brits stay in Europe with ETIAS?
ETIAS permits stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area as a whole — not per country. This is the same limit that currently applies to British visitors under the post-Brexit rules.
Do British children need their own ETIAS?
Yes. Every traveller — including infants and children — will require their own individual ETIAS linked to their own passport. ETA Permits makes it straightforward to apply for all family members at once.
Does ETIAS cover all EU countries?
ETIAS covers the 26 Schengen Area countries, which includes most but not all EU member states. Ireland, for example, is not part of the Schengen Area and will not require ETIAS. Non-EU Schengen countries such as Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland are included.
